Why User Confidence Matters More Than Ever

Sara had been looking forward to the conference for weeks.

It was one of those events that already felt important the moment she booked her ticket. Several of the speakers were people she had wanted to hear for years, and the programme was filled with sessions directly related to the work she cared about most.

The night before the conference, she sat at her kitchen table with her laptop open, going through everything one last time. The schedule. The booking confirmation. The map of the venue.

She also checked the conference website and noticed that Wi-Fi was available for guests.

Good, she thought.

Still, she didn’t worry too much about it. Things usually worked out. Most of the time, her 4G connection was enough anyway.

Early the next morning, she stepped off the train with a coffee cup in her hand and that familiar feeling of anticipation that comes when you know a day might bring new ideas and meaningful conversations.

The lobby was already crowded. Name badges clicked against jackets, someone laughed loudly near the registration desk, and in the background she could hear coffee machines and quiet conversations.

Sara found her seat a few rows into the conference hall just as the first speaker walked onto the stage.

“Before we begin,” he said with a smile, “please take out your phones and go to the website on the screen. We’ll be using it throughout the presentation.”

Around her, people immediately picked up their phones.

Sara did the same, but the page would not load.

She looked at the corner of her screen. One weak signal bar.

She tried again, then switched to the conference Wi-Fi.

Several networks appeared: “Guest,” “Conference,” “Conference‑5G.” One needed a password she didn’t have. Another opened a login page that froze halfway through loading.

Meanwhile, the presentation continued. People around her were already answering questions on their phones while Sara was still trying to figure out whether she was even connected.

After a few minutes, she realized she was no longer listening to the speaker.

Without noticing it, Sara had already stopped thinking about the conference itself and started thinking only about whether the technology would work.

All her attention had shifted to the technology.

“Is it working now?”

“Am I connected?”

“Why can’t I get in?”

That feeling of falling a few steps behind everyone else in the room began to grow. And suddenly, a thought crossed her mind:

“What is technology really worth if the user never feels confident that it works?”

That uncertainty — about connection, access, and whether anything is working, is familiar to many people who rely on assistive listening every day.

For many people with hearing loss, this feeling is not an exception. It is everyday life.

They arrive at hotels, conference venues, churches, theatres, and public buildings where advanced assistive listening technology may already be installed, yet information about the system is often unclear, limited, or completely invisible.

“Is there a hearing loop here?”

“Is the venue using hearing loops, Auracast, or another type of technology?”

“How do I connect?”

“Do I need to change programmes in my hearing aids?”

“Do I need an app?”

And perhaps most importantly:

“Is it actually working?”

In many cases, excellent technology is already installed. The problem is that users are given very little confidence that the system is functioning properly at that very moment.

Maybe the system is turned off.

Maybe the audio level is too low.

Maybe coverage only works properly in certain parts of the room.

Maybe the venue uses a newer technology that the user’s hearing aids are not compatible with.

And the moment the listening experience feels unclear, the uncertainty immediately begins:

“Is it the room?”

“Is it the assistive listening system?”

“Is it my hearing aids?”

“Or is it simply my hearing today?”

For most people, sound simply works.

But for someone who depends on assistive listening, every new environment can require troubleshooting, concentration, and mental energy before they can even begin focusing on the actual content.

So what would an ideal user experience actually look like?

Perhaps the answer is simpler than we think.

What if assistive listening worked more like modern digital infrastructure? visible, intuitive, and easy to understand?

When users enter a venue, there could be a clearly visible information display showing:

Which assistive listening technologies are available.
Whether the system is active.
Whether audio is currently being transmitted.
Exactly how users can connect.

Just as we now expect clear information about Wi-Fi networks and connectivity, assistive listening should be equally easy to discover and use.

Such a solution would not only help users technically. It would create something even more important: Confidence.

Confidence that the technology works, that they are welcome, and that they can focus on the meeting, presentation, or conversation, instead of struggling with the technology itself.

The next time Sara attends a conference, the experience is completely different.

Already in the entrance area, a visible Wi-Fi status display confirms that the network is active and functioning properly. A simple network name. A QR code to scan. Within seconds, the Wi-Fi symbol appears on her phone, confirming that everything is connected and ready.

When the speaker asks participants to open a webpage during the presentation, Sara does it without thinking about the technology. The page loads instantly. She can focus on the content, participate in discussions, and engage with the people around her, just like everyone else in the room.

She no longer has to think about signal strength, logins, or whether the connection is actually working. The technology itself has not become less advanced, it’s simply become visible, understandable, and trustworthy to use.

This is exactly the kind of experience assistive listening technology should provide.

Because when users no longer have to spend their energy figuring out whether technology works, they are finally free to focus on what truly matters; people, conversations, and participation.

Perhaps the next step for accessibility is not only measuring installation, but measuring user confidence.
